Fractional Silver

Finally got around to taking a halfway decent shot of one of my favorite novelty pieces. If anyone has a smaller denomination of .999 silver then, by all means, show us!

Just sold my 5 gram bar yesterday. Now I just have to get rid of my 2g one and some 1/2 ouncers. Fractional silver is pointless in my opinion

They still sell the one gram silver. IMO, if you want fractional silver, you're better off with pre 65 dimes, quarters or halves.

Novelty is, by definition, rather pointless. FWIW, I found this in a sterling bin so I paid whatever the going rate for .925 was at the time. I just tossed it into a pile of rather nice chains and silverware.

Sammy:
I've run across a couple 1/2ozt and 1/4ozt prospectors but no 1/10ozt. I really like the little guys. I think it is neat to see a familiar design shrunken to a smaller form factor. When the opposite is done, like those 5ozt-10ozt or larger SAE knockoffs I think it cheapens the design.

madfranks:
I agree with you and it's not like I'm hunting fractionals but I still find a degree of fun in these little things that can't be found in just another dime plus they're just an easy buy when you do find them.

I kinda like the little guys. I just have a handful of them, 1/2 ouncers and a few 5 gram bars. Nothing serious about them, but I'd like to run across some fractional Prospectors.

What did it sell for, if you don't mind my asking?

I have seen them go for upwards of 10 on fleabay and 8+ on APMEX.

Just my like to actually see them for sale and can't get them as they don't ship to Canada.

I bought a handful of these 1/10th ounce buffalos and pandas last year at a coin show for $2/each. I flipped them on ebay for $5/each. They sold super fast. When I go back to the same coin show next week, i'm gonna try to buy more if they still have them.

Tell me someone didn't try and shoot Kennedy's head off on that one.

I got a small supply of 1G from CMC in manitoba when they couldn't supply a pair of 5g bars I'd won. No way my camera can get any detail from them, but here's his photo
http://goldismoney.info/forums/attac...1&d=1246087684

Exorbitant shipping costs given that he ships unprotected in a plain white envelope.

Was this that e-bay store which also sells paintball supplies? I tried tracking this back and was wondering if their stuff is done in by the Central Mint of Taiwan:

http://www.cmc.gov.tw/main.jsp?language=english

I see that there is a That there is a CMC mint here in Winnipeg:

http://www.cmcmint.com/

, but have only heard of the Royal Canadian Mint here up till now. So is this just an office CMC hold here, or are they actually minting things here.

[NOTE: There is only 1 refiner here and that is KMG : http://www.kmggold.ca/]

CMC stands for Central Metal Corp. They are in Manitoba, but I think most of their stuff is minted in the US. At least the copper is, not sure about the silver. I stock some of the copper products for my website. The second website you linked to seems to have them same products they sell on eBay (along with the paintball stuff). They have nothing to do with Taiwan, as far as I know.

That's the guy. Dunno much about him beyond what he has on E-bay, but it wouldn't surprise me terribly to discover that he imports from asia.

No problem Ag_man, but you better show pictures of the group when you get them so that my frustration can be complete.

Re: Fractional Silver

Here are some fractional silver rounds made by Monarch Precious Metals. They are certainly not a cheap way to stack silver, but they do have a "cool factor" to them. They are entirely hand made, but look very nice in my opinion. My photos don't really do them justice.

I think the Monarch fractionals look like tokens, they have a cheap look and feel to them when compared to Prospector fractionals.

Re: Fractional Silver

I just got some of the 1 and 1/4 oz Lydian Lion rounds from Mom's Silver Shop (Stupid name btw) but the return address on the box said Jason Hommel. Anyway, I thought the rounds were very well done, but as collector items only. I also got one of the NWO 1 oz rounds as a novelty item. The quality of the minting on that was only so-so.

APMEX has some 1/2 oz silver prospectors available. Last I looked there were 9 available.

Some day I'll find these at a place shipping to Canada with a min. order value I can afford.

Here's couple of bars - a 10% fraction of a 1000 thousand ounce bar, right?

Re: Fractional Silver

APMEX has 1/2 oz canadian timberwolves in their clearance section. A bit pricey at 21 bucks apiece (if I remember correctly). I have a sheet of them that I bought a few years ago a lot cheaper.

I like them.

Re: Fractional Silver

I hate fractional silver.
It is just a way to get more premiums.

Granted some exceptions like the Wolves and the odd nice item, like SilverRangers and HS pics.

Thanks...I bought 'em up. I have been looking for some 1/2 oz Prospectors. I already have (10) 1/10's and (10) 1/4's and plenty of the 1985 1 oz'ers. Plan on putting together sets in presentation boxes to sell on fleabay. I'll have about $50 into the sets, and can probably turn them for $75 or so...gotta luv fleabay!!!

Re: Fractional Silver

Just a thought, I wonder if a company like monarch or someone could somehow over stamp junk Quarters and Dimes and sell them as 90% fractional rounds. They would probably sell at a hefty premium, just like the .999 stuff, but no refining and they're already round, so no manufacturing. Just put them in a collar and stamp over the old design. You'd have to use BU coins to get the right weight. Hmmm...
